Motorcycle helmet stickers: are they safe, and where do they go?

It depends on your helmet. Some manufacturers, like Bell, say never to put stickers on it; others, like Shoei and Caberg, allow them only with solvent-free adhesive, because some glues can weaken the shell without visible damage. Check your helmet’s manual before applying any sticker. And never put one on the visor, over the DOT or ECE certification label, or on a helmet that has already taken a hit.

Can stickers damage a motorcycle helmet?

They can. The shell spreads the energy of an impact, and some chemicals in paints, solvents and adhesives weaken it without visible damage. That is why the US helmet standard (FMVSS 218) requires every helmet to carry a label warning that common substances can damage it and listing which cleaning agents, paints and adhesives are safe to use.

ManufacturerWhat it says about stickers
BellNever decorate your helmet with paint, decals, stickers or tape.
Shoei (Europe)Only stickers with solvent-free adhesive; never on a damaged helmet or after a crash; no clear lacquer on top.
CabergMany promotional stickers use aggressive glues that can weaken the shell; apply stickers only to composite (fiber) shells, not thermoplastic ones.
AraiNo stickers or tape on the shield, as they weaken its hard coating.
HJCDo not modify your helmet; stickers leave adhesive residue when removed.

Where should you never put a helmet sticker?

  • On the visor: it blocks your view and damages the coating.
  • Over the certification label (DOT, ECE or your country’s standard): police and buyers need to see it.
  • Over cracks, dents or deep scratches: a helmet that took a hard impact gets replaced, not decorated.
  • Over vents or the visor and chin bar mechanisms.

How do you apply a sticker without damaging the helmet?

  1. Read your helmet’s manual and confirm whether it allows stickers, and which kind.
  2. Choose stickers with solvent-free adhesive, ideally good-quality vinyl.
  3. Clean the spot with mild soap and water only. Never gasoline, thinner, glass cleaner or other solvents.
  4. Apply it to a smooth area of the shell, without bubbles, pressing from the center outward.
  5. Do not put lacquer or clear coat over it.

Are reflective stickers or plates required on a helmet?

In the United States, the DOT symbol must be on the outside back of the helmet. NHTSA notes that a consumer may cover it without breaking federal law, but states can prohibit it, so leave it visible. NHTSA also warns that fake DOT labels are sold for novelty helmets that offer no real protection.

In France, helmets must carry four reflective elements: front, back and one on each side. If you tour Europe, check each country’s rules.

In Colombia, police can no longer require the bike’s plate number on the helmet (Law 2251 of 2022, article 9).

Where should an emergency QR code go on a helmet?

Somewhere visible and scannable with the rider on the ground: on the back or one side of the shell, on a smooth surface, away from the visor and the certification label. If your helmet’s manual does not allow stickers, put the emergency QR code on the bike (tank or fender) and carry another on your jacket or backpack.

Frequently asked questions

Do stickers void a motorcycle helmet warranty?

It depends on the manufacturer. Shoei Europe, for example, allows stickers with solvent-free adhesive but says painting the helmet voids the warranty. Bell recommends no stickers or decals at all. Before decorating your helmet, check the manual or ask the retailer: what your manufacturer says is what counts for both the warranty and your safety.

Is it legal to cover the DOT sticker on a helmet?

Under federal law, a consumer may cover or remove the DOT marking, according to a 2002 NHTSA interpretation, but states can prohibit owners from removing or covering it, and dealers may not. In practice, keep it visible: it is how police and buyers recognize a certified helmet, and fake DOT labels on novelty helmets are a known problem.

Can you paint a motorcycle helmet?

Doing it at home is not recommended. Shoei warns that some helmet materials can be damaged by paint or thinner, and FMVSS 218 requires each helmet to state which paints and adhesives are safe. If you want a custom design, use a shop that works with the manufacturer’s approval, or choose a helmet that comes with the graphics you like.
